How to be a Supreme Court Advocate?
The supreme court of India is the
highest judicial authority that looks after the fundamental rights of the
citizens. The decisions taken by the Supreme Court are to be followed by all
the other courts. Thus, if your aim is to become a Supreme Court advocate, then
it’s a complex task but can be achieved with dedication.
Follow these general steps to
become a Supreme Court advocate in India:
1. Complete
the 12th class with good marks: In order to become a Supreme Court lawyer,
you need to pass the 12th class with good marks to take admission to BA LLB. There are many college offering
courses in BA LLB and you will have a choice to enroll in either a 5-year
integrated course or a 3 years course. Just fill out the application form and
follow the admission procedure to start your journey.
2. Law
College: After taking admission into BALLB College, you will be needed to do internships with advocates or law
firms. This will keep you acquainted with practical knowledge regarding the
field. It will also strengthen your base and give you an idea of the ground
reality of the working style of lawyers.
3. Bar
Council of India Registration: Once you have received your law degree, you
must register with the Bar Council of India. You can practice as an advocate in
the court of India only after approval by the BCI. Registration can be done in
any state where you want to practice.
4. Join
as Junior Assistant: In order to become a Supreme Court advocate, start by
becoming a junior assistant to any Supreme Court advocate. This will give you
an
idea about the Supreme Court proceedings and make you learn the best practices
to be followed. Also, the work culture can be understood, thus acting as a
stepping stone for your great future.
5. All
India Bar Exam: To practice as a lawyer in any court of the country, it’s
important to clear the ALL India Bar Exam, conducted by the BCI every year.
It’s an objective type exam of 3 hours 30 minutes duration and it’s mandatory
to pass in this examination and get the certificate.
6. Start
with Subordinate Courts: Now when you can practice in any court in India,
you can start your career with subordinate courts too, which is most advisable.
Getting the experience, understanding the court procedure and ground knowledge
attained during the process will help when you finally practice in the Supreme
Court.

take around 6 years after the completion of a BA LLB to practice as an advocate in the supreme court of India.
8. Clear
the Advocate on Record Exam: All the advocates who want to practice in the
supreme court of India have to clear the Advocate on Record Exam (AOR Exam). It
checks the knowledge and skills of the person to make sure that they are the
right fit to practice at such a higher court. After clearing the exam, get
yourself registered as Advocate on Record Member in the Supreme Court bar
association.
9. Office
Setup and Start Practicing: After qualifying for the advocate on Record
exam, you will need to set up your office with a registered office clear near
the premises of the Supreme Court. Complete all the other formalities and be
ready to be accepted as a supreme court advocate by the judge of the Supreme
Court. Now, you can practice independently and take up the cases as per your
field of interest and specialty.
